Designing a Lace Chart

I’m currently knitting and designing a bathing suit. The middle middriff part is going to be lace. This is the most unique piece I have tried to design so far, and I decided to go all out and create my own charted lace. This is the first time I’ve created my own chart and tried to use my knowledge of lace to design an intricate pattern. I’ve only designed basic spider lace and fir cone type lace patterns. Here’s a picture of my sketching, and first attempt at translating the visual sketch to charted stitches. I’ve started swatching the center panel and it’s actually going quite well. Obviously there are some problems, but that’s why you do the swatch. I’m definitely learning more about lace by going through this process, and it’s not as difficult as I thought it’d be! Hopefully it won’t be too long before you get to see the final piece.
