… I knit with Plarn

I have been knitting with “plarn” for a very long time. I wasn’t actually aware of this catchy nickname until recently. Plarn is plastic yarn made by cutting plastic grocery bags into a continuous long thin piece of plastic. This is shown at the right.
You then knit various items out of the balled plastic. Items commonly made are beach bags, coasters, or something that needs to be water proof. Colorful grocery bags can be strategically used to create artistic patterns in your knitting.

You can find many uses for knitted plarn, I made slippers that are nicely durable and water proof, they just need a fabric lining.
This are my sturdier by making the bottom of the slipper multiple layers of plarn, covering on the inside a laminated piece of cardboard or stiff plastic. My little sister knitted a large bag out of plarn, it could be a beach bag, reusable grocery bag, or any kind of large tote. I am shown modeling this bag below.

I also knitted a purse out of this material that is much smaller, complete with a large pretty button for closure. I used this as my day to day purse for a long time, and it is quite the conversation piece. I visited my grandma in Idaho to find out that she had started using plarn, and she crocheted this rug out of it. It’s used out side the door as a place to put wet shoes. There are so many ways to use plarn, it’s free and a great way to upcycle all of those grocery bags, so start getting creative! If you want anymore info on how to make any of the items featured feel free to comment!

  1. I once tried to crochet with plarn but got frustrated and gave up – your projects all look great you have inspired me to try again but this time I will try to knit instead of crochet!
