My dog is an adorable sausage-like corgi named Sophie. She absolutely hates dog clothes so I’ve never tried to knit anything for her before, but they make her so cute! So they’re at least nice for pictures. This pattern is very simple. It is a cape like sweater and the main piece of knitting ends up being a symmetrical octagon shape. The sizing doesn’t have to be exact as you will be creating straps to go around the tummy that can vary in length. Another benefit of this is that it creates a less insulating sweater, so if your dog is like my corgi it wont over heat. This sweater uses basic garter stitch but could be easily adapted to stockinette, seed stitch, or other basic textural patterns, just follow the correct increases and decreases.
Use size 7 needles
Any yarn will do, generic acrylic works perfect
Cast on about 20 stitches, this will vary based on the dog you are knitting for, so gauge it however you like.
Row 1: K1, knit into the front and back, *K1, repeat from * until two stitches remaining, knit into the front and back, K1
Row 2: Knit
Repeat these two rows until you’ve achieved the final width you want for your cape like sweater. Then simply continue knitting all stitches until you’ve achieved the length it will take to reach the base of your dog’s neck. Then:
Odd row: K1, K2tog, *K1, repeat from * until three stitches left, K2tog, K1
Even row: Knit
Repeat these two rows until you’ve reached the original amount of stitches you cast on. Then cast off.
For the straps just knit thin rectangles the appropriate size you need them. You will need two for the tummy and one for the neck.
To finish the sweater use a tapestry needle to sew the tummy and neck straps into place. Fold back the collar and sew that into place as well.
And that’s it! This is truly a quick knit and your dog will be looking amazing!
