So this weekend it was my best friend’s 21st birthday, and as she’s always the one to fashion jello shots for parties I figured a nice birthday treat was to make fancy jello shots for her! It ended up a group activity though because she wanted to participate, being a jello pastry chef can be quite fun.
We tried to create two types of jello shots that have been part of the current fancy jello shot fad. The first inspiration came from That’s So Michelle, a blog with many different jello shot ideas. We tried to create the cherry heart jello shots as the party title was a punny “Valentine’s Shae” (Shae being my friend’s name). So, Michelle, if you ever read this I want to apologize ahead of time because our shots did not really turn out like the inspiration. I’m not sure what went wrong with the white layer, if I didn’t let the red layer cool enough or something else happened, but when I added the red layer it floated to the top creating quite a different look that the inspiration. So, this mishap combined with the substitution of black cherry jello and using stemless cherries changed my inspiration to cherry cordial candies. We didn’t have time but if you added a chocolate element to these shots such as magic shell chocolate or made them in chocolate cups they would be the PERFECT jello shot version of a cherry cordial candy.
My original plan was to use a heart shaped cookie cutter as the original inspiration blog used, but it ended up being too big. I cut a few into heart shapes, but it was hard to do by hand. Hence, the rest of our beautiful alcohol jello became jello shot pie. It actually looks really good and many people were confused that it wasn’t actually some kind of pastry. Very tasty, and by the end of one piece you can’t really taste the vodka anymore!
One last change from the original recipe was that I added some of the maraschino cherry juice to the cherry jello. It added a last delicious cherry kick that allowed this to be eaten as pie! We named the pie Sexual Cherry Pie. Dark cherry is just so much more seductive than normal cherry, and with alcohol, well the pie basically named itself. Enjoy!
